THE NEXT CHAPTER

Vision for the Coming Years

ISWA will be an influential global association with technical experience recognized by entities with decision-making power at the national and international level, built with highly qualified volunteers on environmental and human issues, with specific knowledge and experience in waste and resource management.

These volunteers, supported by a dynamic, multicultural and versatile executive team are committed to sharing their knowledge and contributing to a healthier planet and humanity, which treats and value their waste as resources and defines good environmental examples for society.

Values I believe:

Healthy Environment as a Human Right

I believe that in ISWA, defending the right to a healthy environment is a human right, and that adequate waste management is essential for this human right to concrete. But I also believe it is a human responsibility, and that one cannot discuss the end of the process without involving who began it.

One Size Doesn't Fit All

I believe that there are no miraculous, imported solutions that fit any society or anywhere. The same size doesn't fit everyone - a good solution in a country or a region may not be a good solution elsewhere.

No Technical Bias

I do not believe in technical biases, whether they are about the treatment of organic waste, waste to energy or fair transition. We are in a multi-cultural, multi-racial association with representatives of all religions, where all human beings can express themselves, where we can present diverse, more conservative or more innovative technical solutions, and help decision makers think by their own head and their own wallet.

Closing Open Dumpsites

I believe that the closing of open dumpsites is possible, necessary, and that it should be mandatory. No human right is safeguarded in this environment and should not be possible to enjoy any economic or social advantage with this activity. I also believe we are all responsible for the existence of these places, either because much of those materials come from distant countries or because we have not been able to be strong and influential enough for governments to commit to closing these locations and betting on more suitable solutions for their population.

Our Planet. Our ISWA.

Changing the World for the Better

When people ask me what ISWA is, I used to answer that it is the organization that helps countries and organizations perform better in their waste management, an organization that brings together professionals from all over the world, from various sectors of activity and knowledge, from universities to companies, with very diverse technical capabilities, which make this a unique association.

After a few years as a volunteer and having already been through several work groups, projects and experiences, I already know that it is much more than that – it is mainly a group of people who believe that their gestures and attitudes can change the world, who put their knowledge and experience available and at the service of the planet and that they do so with the possible and available resources, and with ethical and reliable partners.

And it is with this motivation that I believe the time has come to make my most substantial contribution, and put to use my ability to make connections between people, organizations and entities that seek and materialize solutions to environmental problems, contributing more effectively to these solutions.

I count on everyone, in the certainty that they can also count on me.

Ana's Footprint at ISWA

Communication and

Social Issues Group

Ana started at ISWA in the Communication and Social Issues Group, and over time was Vice-Chair, Chairperson, and part of ISWA's Technical and Scientific Committee - she was the youngest person and the first woman to be part of this committee. At the age of 30, she assumed this mission and represented ISWA at national and world congresses, work meetings, local projects and management events.

Task Force on

Resource Management

Task Force dedicated to the topics of circular economy and resource management, which included the participation of a multidisciplinary team from the ISWA Technical and Scientific Committee, and which resulted in a collection of reports and videos that are still a reference on this topic today for the association. Ana was part of the review team and coordinated the final outputs of the team's work.

COVID-19 Communication Guidelines

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ana promoted informative videos, training actions and educational materials, that were released by ISWA with good waste management practices to be implemented by citizens and organizations, at a time when there was no information available from the authorities. This information resulted from rapid work to compile information and disseminate it at ISWA level when there were no valid references available.

International Waste Manager

Since this certification was created at ISWA, Ana encouraged the process from the beginning and involved dozens of candidates, not only from her company but also from professionals with the potential to obtain the certification.

ISWA Scholarship Programme: Trading Trash for Education

ISWA program, led by Timothy Bouldry, to which Ana gave her personal and professional support during the period in which it was active.

Edited Publications

Ana has more than 15 publications related to waste and resource management and its association with social issues, behavior change and environmental communication. These are the three most relevant publications, published in book form:

About Ana

Ana began her professional activity in the Environment in 1996, in the Forest Park of Monsanto, at the Lisbon City Council, but it was in 2000 that she entered the wonderful world of waste and resources when she joined Valorsul, the company that manages waste from Greater Lisbon with an integrated management system.

For 16 years, she was part of a multidisciplinary management team that implemented and managed urban waste for a population of 1.2 million inhabitants, with collection and treatment methods that use complementary technologies, including manual and automatic sorting of packaging, anaerobic digestion of bio-waste, energy recovery through incineration, landfills with energy recovery projects, among other initiatives.

Professional Experience

Her specialization is contact with the population and ensuring that environmental communication is ensured with all interested parties, whether through institutional partnerships or with the population, through the implementation of projects with the community and management of all contacts.

During these years, her experiences in crisis management, company mergers and the holding company privatization process, allowed Ana to be challenged in 2016 to create the corporate communications area at EGF, the holding company of 11 companies which, in Portugal, is leader in the sector and which treats and recovers around 60% of the country's urban waste, with added responsibilities and projects that impact the Portuguese population.

In 2024, Ana joins Mota-Engil Environment, working in Marketing and Communication of the holding that is a shareholder of EGF and SUMA, the two leading companies in Portugal in the collection and treatment of waste and resources, but also with international experience and projects in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
